I heard this story today and reminded me to upload this mix from a while back. This was the second half of a two-parter but I can’t find the first half.
Anyway the story goes something like this:
It’s about this kid, around 17, ready to go off into the world of higher education.
And so he applied to the big ones, the Oxbridge and Camford Universities, the Red Brick Institutions, set his goals high. And so in his application the lad puts down his interests and hobbies.
Now most people bullshit their interest with crap like “I like to read” or “I like to socialise with my friends” which in fact means you read the cereal packet to send off your tokens and hang out on street corners getting looks off curb crawlers.
But this dude is all honest and puts down that he’s a big Dungeons & Dragons player; he likes rolling them die and fantasising roles to play.
His dad is like “No one cares about your games” It’s like putting down your gamerscore on your CV. This was before Television, when the world was black and white and kids would collect glass milk bottles for half pennies, shillings and crowns.
So this chap goes for an interview at Cambridge, and comes out beaming. His dad is curious at his socially inept son’s ability to move his mouth sideways; his son recounts how the Don at Cambridge read about the D&D in his application and spent the next 3 hours in the interview discussing Dwarf abilities or wearing wizard hats or something of that nature.
The boy gave two fingers to Cambridge in the end, did some other course at some 2-bit University; but he’s ended up working for a major video game company making MMORPG’s or FPS’s or STFU’s or TL:DR’s.
Goes to show: be honest, do what you fucking love and screw Cambridge.
